Disease Prevention Starts with Sound Nutrition/Una Buena Nutrición Es Fundamental Para Prevenir Enfermedades

By: Avni Madhani, Volunteer
Earlier this month, I received the opportunity to volunteer at a Gardner Family Health Network Clinic. My daily experiences at the clinic have consisted of friendly and enjoyable interactions with not only the patients but also the hardworking and receptive staff. Throughout my time at Gardner, I have learned a great deal about nutrition and its associated challenges.
After numerous patient studies, I have begun to realize the immense extent to which nutrition contributes to disease prevention and overall individual well-being. The underlying cause behind some of the most serious diseases and conditions in the world today, including diabetes and obesity, is poor nutrition. Furthermore, the implementation of certain simple changes to one’s daily diet in an effort to consume more balanced and nutritious meals can greatly reduce an individual’s risk of acquiring similar diseases and can lead to a generally healthier lifestyle.
However, although effecting changes in one’s diet may seem relatively simple, a severe lack of nutritional knowledge in the present age greatly limits such efforts. For example, many diabetics and pre-diabetics do not understand that carbohydrates break down into sugars in a person’s body and that an increased consumption of carbohydrates will lead to higher blood sugar levels. Similarly, a great number of people do not realize the value of exercise in burning calories and maintaining strong bones and muscles and the importance of eating vegetables on a daily basis in order for one’s body to obtain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
The absence of such knowledge among adults has largely contributed to the extremely sharp and worrisome rise in the rates of childhood obesity. Unaware of the consequences, parents permit their children to consume packaged foods high in saturated fat and sugar, such as chips and soda, on a regular basis, and such unhealthy habits often lead to the onset of obesity and related health concerns early on in an individual’s life.
I would like to encourage all the individuals reading this blog to begin investing in their personal health and well-being by using the vast range of available resources provided by Gardner. At Gardner, one can find knowledgeable and helpful Registered Dieticians and Certified Diabetes Educators who can help a person create a customized diet to suit his or her needs.
